Small panels with religious subjects from the 13th and 14th centuries in Tuscany constitute a large and well-known genre of objects for domestic use and private devotion. Individual panels, but also diptychs, triptychs and sometimes polyptychs, were as widespread as books of hours in north-western Europe. As in the latter, votive panels present the full range of artistic production: from mass-produced objects to masterpieces of important private commissions. This book is a study of these objects, which are considered as a category in their own right, with the intention of stimulating a debate to explore their most important aspects. Text: engl.
