Bemerkung:
Preface Vedran Mimica.workshop. Winy Maas proposed an provocative and inspiring brief; he asked participants to redesign the cities of Rotterdam and Manhattan in a way that everything is reachable within 5 minutes. Urbanites should be able to travel to any destination in their respective cities within 5 minutes - of course, dependent upon the mode of transport. Maas stated that urban density requires proximity, but that traveling time in the modern metropolis is forever expanding. A series of serious questions arise from the challenging brief: "What will such a city look like? What happens to such an hypothesis if cars are the only mode of transport? What will such a city look like when it is only accessed by public transport? Or by walking?' During the 5 day workshop, students from the architectural faculties of Barcelona. Delft, Ljubljana. Rouen and Zagreb, as well as students from the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and the Berlage Institute worked in 8 groups in redesigning Rotterdam and Manhattan. In a workshop format, the process and debate is often more interesting and illuminating than the results.
