Bemerkung:
EA. Erschienen zur Ausstellung. - «This is a comprehensive overview of the career of Tony Smith (1912 - 1980), best known for the monumental sculptures that he began to create in the 1960s. The volume, published to accompany a retrospective exhibition at The Museum of Modern art, New York in July 1998, presents not only Smith's sculpture, but also his paintings and drawings, and his architectural projects, both realized and unrealized. During the 1950s, Smith became a friend and colleague of the leading Abstract Expressionists, Barnett, Newman, Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still and especially Jackson Pollock. His later work placed him in the company of a younger generation of Minimalist and post-Minimalist artists, and throughout his life he was an articulate theoretician and a gifted teacher. This book, which includes many excepts from Smith's writings and letters, as well as interviews, in an intellectual portrait of a vibrant period in American art.»
