Mummies are usually associated with Ancient Egypt. However, the fact that mummification practices also existed in numerous other cultures in Asia, the Americas and the Pacific region is demonstrated in the volume accompanying a large special exhibition at the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums in Mannheim. What religious and spiritual ideas are hidden behind the mummies of these cultures? The artificially prepared corpses are juxtaposed with the naturally preserved dead from moors, ice and desert.
